Several member countries of the European Union such as Spain, Ireland, and Greece, have imposed very harsh policies to keep their economy afloat at the beginning of this year. As a result their governments, along with the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund, were widely criticized. Looking at some of their methods, like decreasing the number of public employees and liquidating government assets, it is easy to see why their approach may have its critics.
However, in the United States, many state governments are also employing the same approach to stabilize and maintain a healthy economic status.
According to the International Committee of the Fourth International (ICFI), a communist international organization consisting of followers of Leon Trotsky (Trotskyists), many American states are also slashing down public employees and are in the process of privatizing a wide range of public facilities and services.
According to the report by ICFI, Obama’s stimulus package was not able to stave off unemployment during 2009 to 2010. After the inadequate assistance program failed, the Obama Administration and the Congress did not move to save 600,000 state government jobs from being eliminated.
Although the US economy has shown signs of growth, many states are still having difficulties recovering fiscally. ICFI also reports that many state governments are now being callous to the citizens with regards to its economic policies and are all looking for ways to achieve monetary gain without any regards for the people’s well being. Here are some examples:
- The State Government of California is now in the process of putting six state parks for auction to the private sector. While this move may seem understandable, the agreement entails that the firm or firms that will win the park will be given the authority to operate ALL concessions;
- In Illinois, the government has enacted a bill that families with children on ventilators must pay a huge amount of money to cover for the ventilation charge. Otherwise, the child will be placed in a nursing institution;
- In Florida, the state government has reduced the insurance benefit coverage to unemployed citizens to 14 weeks. The state of Florida is among the areas with the highest rate of unemployment. The average time before a citizen gets a job is 40 weeks.
The Socialist Equality Party is aiming to run in the upcoming US Presidential Election and is looking to change the economic policies currently at work in the United States. The Party comes supported by the ICFI.
The ICFI encourages people to demand for their social basic rights and reject pro-capitalist policies of both the Republican and the Democratic parties. These rights include adequate housing, free public education, and access to healthcare and pensions to name a few.
